This sweater was inspired by a piece by master art quilter Cindy Grisdela. I was taken with the graphic punch, the color palette, and the dynamic angles of her shapes.

Intarsia was a natural choice of technique and is easiest with the front panel as a separate piece. The provisional cast-on allows for tailoring the length at the end. The sleeve stitches are picked up at the shoulder and knit top-down, in the round. Include the cozy turtleneck or finish the neck with a crew neck.

This design is similar to my MetaMarclay, but I’ve simplified the neck and shoulders.

Sizes 1 (2, 3, 4) (5, 6, 7) (8, 9, 10) correspond to garment chest measurements:
40¾ (43¼, 45½, 50½) (55¼, 57½, 62½) (67¼, 69½, 72) inches/
103.5 (109.5, 116, 128) (140, 146.5, 158.5) (170.5, 177, 183) cm. I recommend about 10 inches/ 25.5 cm of positive ease.

Ewetopia Ridge Sport and Ewetopia Silk and Mohair held together.

  • Ridge Sport - 100% wool, 300 yds/ 274 m per 3.5 oz/ 100 g; sample in Natural Dark Brown; 4 (5, 5, 5) (6, 6, 7) (7, 7, 8) skeins
  • Silk and Mohair - 72% Superfine Kid Mohair/ 28% Silk, 455 yds/ 416 m per 1.7 oz/ 50 g; sample in Charcoal; 3 (3, 3, 4) (4, 4, 5) (5, 5, 5) skeins

Holst Supersoft 50% Merino, 50% Shetland wool; 314 yds/287 m per 50 g; sample color: Pebble (grey/tan); 8 (9, 9, 10) (11, 11, 12) (13, 14, 14) cakes. Note: that Holst Supersoft is available less expensively on cones of 500 g, or approximately 3,140 yd/2,870 m.

Any worsted weight yarns that yield the design gauge can be used without holding two yarns together. Approximately

Motif yarn:

  • Each of the 3 shapes on the front requires about 45 yds/ 40 m.
  • The smaller motif on the back requires about 8 yds/ 7 m.
  • Motif yarn should be same yarn weight and type as MC (all non-superwash or all superwash). No need for a companion strand if the gauge matches.
  • Dark sample included 4 colors of Ewetopia Ridge Sport held together with lace weight silk-mohair (3 of the 4 Ridge Sport colors were part of Ewetopia’s Wild Flowers Mini Set).
  • Light grey sample made use of many leftovers of Shetland style yarns, held double to achieve same gauge as MC.

Needle size
Always use a needle size that gives you the design gauge.

  • 1 US #7/4.5 mm circular needle, 40-inch/100-cm for body and for sleeves (magic loop)
  • 1 US #6/4 mm circular needle, 40-inch/100-cm for ribbing
  • 1 US #4/3.5 mm circular needle, 40-inch/100 cm for turtleneck
  • US #7/4.5 mm double pointed needles or short circulars for sleeves (optional)
  • US #6/4 mm double pointed needles or short circulars for ribbings (optional)
  • 1 US #1 or 2/2.5 mm crochet hook (for picking up sts and provisional cast-on); exact size not important

Don’t forget to download the motif charts, which are not in the main pattern. The two versions are the same except for the fill colors and grid lines. The motif charts include both graphical charts and stitch count tables.
