This traditional lace shawl was designed especially for the Spin a Shawl group on Ravelry! I wanted to design a pattern to showcase the beauty of handspun lace, but which also would be a classic, elegant lace design. As I was spinning the MCN fiber the soft, impressionistic colorway began to remind me of the later Monet paintings of “Nymphéas” ( “Waterlillies”), and I decided to work the shawl in a lilypad-like shape. As the shawl pattern unfolded, I was reminded of the rippling rings of water as raindrops fall, and I decided to create a border that reminded me of rain on the spikey leaves of the waterlillies. The finished shawl is a gossamer, delicate piece that I hope you will enjoy always!

PLEASE NOTE-- this pattern has been fully tech edited and I test knit the sample. It is being test knit again now, and if any errata are found a new version will be uploaded immediately! RE-TESTING IS NOW COMPLETE :)

Many thanks to deserttyrtle and our other test knitters!

It is important that you choose a somewhat strong fiber or blend if handspinning for this shawl, as it does require reasonably tight blocking in the inner sections and the bottom points are pulled out aggressively in the blocking.

I used a handspun MCN blend single ply from NoTwoSnowflakes roving in the “Flowerbox” colorway. I spun 990 yds/99 grams and had plenty leftover.

Needles: US 2 Circular, 20”, US 3 Circular 40”, and US 4 Circular 60”
Notions: stitch markers, if desired. Darning needle for weaving ends.
