Nighthawk
nighthawk
n. a recurring thought that only seems to strike you late at night—an overdue task, a looming and shapeless future—that circles high overhead during the day, that pecks at the back of your mind while you try to sleep, that you can successfully ignore for weeks, only to feel its presence hovering outside the window, waiting for you to finish your coffee, passing the time by quietly building a nest.
From “The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows”
This simple but stylish shawl is engaging and rhythmic to knit, and easy and fun to wear. It combines a lot of colorful and engaging stitch patterns.
Size
One size: approx. 170 cm/67” long along center and 70 cm/28” at the widest point.

3 skeins of Singleton by The Uncommon Thread (100% merino, 434m/475y per 115g). Shown in colorways: CC1 – Baby Elephant Walk, CC2 – Hi Vis Green, CC3 – Botany, 1 skein each.
Since this yarn is now discontinued, I recommend substituting it with Everyday Singles from The Uncommon Thread.

3.5 mm/US #4 circular needle (80 cm/32” long).
3.25 mm/US #3 circular needle (80 cm/32” long), or one size smaller than main needle.
3.75 mm/US #5 circular needle (80 cm/32” long), or one size bigger than main needle.

18 sts and 40 rows = 10 cm/4” in Garter st measured flat after wet blocking.
The gauge isn’t crucial on this project, but differences will affect the finished size as well as the required yardage.
