Niffler
One of the most popular creatures seen in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Nifflers have a long snout similar to a platypus, claws ideal for grabbing shiny things, and sleek black fur. Obsessed with stealing and hoarding shiny objects, Nifflers hide their loot in a large pocket on their tummy before taking it back home to add to their nests. Visual effects supervisor Christian Manz states, “One of the big inspirations for the Niffler was the honey badger. We saw footage of one raiding somebody’s house—and nothing would get in its way.”
An interesting creature calls for interesting construction. Begun at the neckline and worked downward through the body, live stitches are placed on hold for various body parts, omitting the need for excessive finishing, then put back on needles and worked later. Stitches are then picked up along the original cast-on for the head. Wrap-and-turn short rows are used to shape the heels and elbows, while I-cords create his grabby fingers and toes. His bill is grafted together using Kitchener stitch for a seamless join. Better hide your treasure!
