Nasturtium is a cheerful color work mitten, with a wide cuff, a two-color Estonian braid and flower motif main design, plus a matching headband! It is worked in the round entirely from charts and has a Norwegian style thumb that forms on one side of the mitten palm. The thumb gusset is flanked by two columns of contrast color stitches. Stitch markers will help separate the growing gusset from the rest of the mitten pattern. All gusset increases occur inside the two columns of contrast color stitches. Reserve the thumb gusset stitches onto scrap yarn to better permit the mitten to be tried on for size and fit.

Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift comes in fantastic array of colors, so please choose colors you like best. The mittens take two 115 yards skeins of each color and the headband takes one skein of each color. Please note that Shetland yarns soften substantially once washed!

Use any needle method suitable for working in the round. Instructions for working with two colors and working the Two-Color Braid are included.

Gauge in Stockinette: 28 sts and 38 rows = 4 inches (10 cm)
Gauge in stranded cuff pattern: 32 sts and 40 rows = 4 inches (10 cm)

If this mitten size is too small, it is easy to make the hand circumference larger. Add stitches on either side of the side columns in multiples of four. Adding four stitches will add a little less than one-half inch (about 1cm) total hand circumference.

Enjoy!
