Murder Mystery Knitalong 2025
Welcome to the second annual Murder Mystery Knitalong collaboration between Amanda & Wendy!
Wendy (of Maker Savvy) adapts a murder mystery story for all the in-person knitters to enjoy, and Amanda writes a mystery shawl pattern with 6 “clues.”
This year’s MKAL begins September 12, 2025.
We’re making a shawl of secret shape and size (although I can you tell that it’s quite large), and if you followed along last year, then you still won’t know what to expect because this year’s is completely different. Mwahaha.
Our shawl is inspired by the pleasures of gathering with friends, the unexpected new pathways that emerge through chance meetings, and how every connection creates a ripple of effects that stretches far beyond what each of us can know.
Our mystery follows an unlikely group of friends and their secrets, loosely inspired by The Brokenwood Mysteries.
Yarn:
8 x 50g skeins of Koigu fingering weight total in one of the following colour combinations:
6-Colour Version (recommended)
- MC (main colour) = 3 skeins
- CCs (contrast colours) x 3 = 3 colours, 1 skein of each, that look fun when interspersed amid MC
- Pops x 2 = 2 colours that really stand out, 1 skein of each. They will be sprinkled and scattered around in small amounts and can create fun little zingy bits.
3-Colour Version
- MC = 3 skeins
- CC = 3 skeins
- Pop = 2 skeins
Note: If you’re knitting from stash, you can use up little bits of odd variegated yarns in place of the CCs. As long as they all add up to 150g / 525 yds / 480 m, you can use them in any combination in the “CC” instructions.
I used:
MC = Koigu KPM in 2403 light grey
CC1 = Koigu KPPPM in The Marsh
CC2 = Koigu KPPPM in Barn Art
CC3 = Koigu KPPPM in Space Exploration
Pop1 = Koigu KPM in 1153 hot pink
Pop2 = Koigu KPM in 2133 bright aqua blue
Needles:
Size 3.75mm circulars with a long cable (40” to 48”) for knitting flat. If you have an interchangeable set, you can start on a 32” circular, then change lengths as necessary.
We’re knitting with fingering-weight yarn at a loose, drapey gauge. Aim for between 5 and 6 sts per inch after blocking.
Notions:
Stitch holder cords or waste yarn
Stitch markers, if desired
Dates of each clue release:
Friday, September 12, 2025
Tuesdays, September 23, 30, October 7, 14, 21, 2025.
