I create new crochet stitches to show a quieter, softer side of crochet: calm, simple, and casual. My patterns may look unusual at first only because the technique is new to you, just like your first chain or single crochet once was. After a little practice, it feels easy and natural.

I continue exploring crochet cables, this time in a simple, lovely way. This technique appears in Chapter 5 of the New Ways with Crochet book and in my Crochet Cables series.

The Moonwake sweater combines three stitch patterns:

• simple two-wave cables that stand out beautifully in worsted weight yarn,
• rows of gentle eyelets (another new stitch - check it out in this blog post!),
• and textured single crochet ribbing ridges between them.

The sweater has a relaxed, boxy shape with a straight silhouette. It is easy to adjust in width, length, and sleeve depth, so you can shape it to what feels most comfortable for you.

MATERIALS

• Yarn: Malabrigo Rios; worsted weight; 210 yd (192 m) per 100 g skein; 100% merino wool
• Hooks: U.S. H-8 (5 mm), I-9 (5.5 mm) - for the sleeves
• Yarn needle
• Stitch markers

6 (6, 7, 8) skeins in Sobre La Luna colorway
1080 (1260, 1450, 1640) yds/ 990 (1150, 1325, 1500) m

CONSTRUCTION
The sweater is worked top down with the increases placed along the shoulders. As soon as the desired width is reached, the front and back are worked separately to the desired length.

The sleeve stitches are picked up using the border sts around the arm openings and worked in the round, top down to the desired length. Decreases are evenly placed along each sleeve creating a gentle taper toward the cuff.

The sides are joined with a mattress seam to align the ridges and cables neatly.

The pattern is written for four size options. Choose the size closest to yours with an added generous amount of positive ease for a relaxed fit.
