A playful study of the traditional handkerchief’ style silk French scarf, this design is its wild, rustic sister.

A square shawl made in the round and worn as a triangle… it is as contradictory, magical, and whimsical as a moonlit night. 



You can knit the Moon Tide Shawl in two colours, three colours, seven colours, or more. Follow the suggested chart sequence, or choose your own adventure. Play around and follow the moon tide, for a bespoke shawl that is beautiful, chic, and unique.

MATERIALS & INFORMATION 


Gauge
18 sts x 22 rounds = 10cm x 10cm/ 4” x 4”
in stockinette and stranded colourwork

(or as preferred - meeting gauge is not essential)


Needles

circular needles, 4.5mm in diameter
or as needed to meet gauge


Yarn 

fingering-weight yarn (400m/ 100g approx)

Yarn Quantities 

MC = up to 100g

BC = up to 50g

CC = up to 50g


(Note: If using more than 3 colours, then smaller amounts of BC and CC will be needed, but the amount of MC will remain the same. Choosing a multitude of colours for BC and CC is a great way to use up leftover scrap yarns.)

Note that the colourwork in this pattern is extremely easy and beginner friendly. There is no ‘increasing in pattern’ involved.

NOTES ON YARN SELECTION

This pattern is best suited for airy, woollen-spun yarns that can be knitted above gauge (i.e. on much larger needles than you are supposed to use with it).

That said, it does work with worsted spun and superwash yarns, including standard sock yarns.

The pattern allows you to adjust gauge and needle size as needed to suit different yarns.

If choosing a yarn on the heavier side of fingering weight or into the sports weight territory, keep in mind that the yarn needs to be fine enough so that she fabric can be doubled without the shawl becoming overly rigid.
