Mitred Square Socks 013
Mitred Squares, also known as Domino Knitting, also known as Modular Knitting - some of the names for this great patchwork technique.
These socks are worked flat but there is only one seam to sew on each sock. Each square is picked up from those around it. The heel is shaped with short rows. The toe and cuff are worked in the round.
Finished Size - 20cm (8in) circumference at ankle, cuff to heel is 12.5cm (5in) (adjustable) and the foot is 15.5cm (6¼in) long (adjustable).
Stitches Used
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing - sl1-k2tog,psso, k2tog, k2tog tbl (diagrams), picking up stitches (diagram), short row shaping and wrap stitches (diagrams), matress stitch for seam (diagram).
Materials
Any 4ply yarn - use a yarn that shows stitches clearly; the squares are joined by picking up stitches. Variegated, multi-coloured, or hand painted yarns will emphasise the different directions of knitting. Solid colours will emphasise the texture. I used Colinette Jitterbug for these samples.
A set of five 3mm (UK11/US2-3) double pointed needles.
