Okay, it’s not a hat—but there should be a hat soon!

Knit this striking geometric neckwarmer cowl in just a half skein of fancy tonal yarn! It’s all worked flat and the seaming is actually a bindoff technique, so once the knitting is done, the seaming is done too. Work is easy, with shaping done via sharp, dapper-looking increases, and the all-garter-stitch texture is pretty cozy.

Materials:

  • 200-220 yards, or half a standard skein of most nice sockweight/fingeringweight yarns; the sample is shown in Malabrigo Yarn Sock in Playa, Frank Ochre, and Candombe.
  • 1 24”+ circular needle in US3/3.25mm, or size needed for gauge
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • scrap yarn for provisional cast-on
  • crochet hook for provisional cast-on, 2.25mm or size suited to yarn

Gauge:
Gauge is 26 sts and 52 rows over 4”/10cm, in blocked garter stitch, worked flat.. Please be sure to check your gauge.

Measurements:
Flat, this cowl measures 9.5”/24cm across at the openings at either end, 8.5”/22cm across the middle, and 8.25”/21cm deep. It blocks pretty naturally to a slight flair, making the center narrower.
