Meryton Cowl
The first of my 3 Elizabeth Stitch Cowls! This one is a “simple Moebius” - just a short scarf-like piece attached end-to-end with a half twist. This is an easy project and a way to learn a new stitch pattern!
Pattern Romance based on “Pride and Prejudice” in honor of Elizabeth Bennet!

A Walk to Meryton
In which the five Bennet sisters go for an outing, and Lydia takes a dip.
“Alas, shall we never get there?” whined Kitty, sniffling. “I’ve a pebble in my slipper and it really is too distressing!”
“Not far now,” Lizzy replied. “Use your handkerchief and stop sniffling!”
“Young ladies who complain,” moralized Mary, “Shall never attract a swain!”
“A lot you would know about attracting swains!” Lydia scoffed, then suddenly ran ahead of her four older sisters as Meryton came into view.
Jane was leaning on Lizzy’s arm, somewhat fatigued from the walk, as they approached the Meryton village green in a more sedate manner. On the far side of the duckpond stood a group of officers of the ----shire Militia.
Lizzy and Jane gasped as Lydia suddenly dove headlong into the duckpond and began swimming a fierce breaststroke directly towards the gathering of men. Kitty jumped into the pond as well, but could only splash ineffectively in frustration, whining, “Wait for me!”
“Good gracious! Wherever did Lydia learn to swim like that?” Lizzy asked in amazement.
“I fear our Aunt Philips has been giving her lessons,” Jane answered, grimly. ”You know she was a champion duckpond swimmer herself?”
“Ah yes,” said Lizzy. “It is how she caught her husband, isn’t it?”
“Oh dear,” lamented Jane as Lydia hauled her dripping figure out of the pond to stand in front of a circle of attentive officers. “I believe Lydia’s lace has slipped.” And indeed, a bedraggled scrap of lace was floating in the pond, being worried by a brown-breasted mallard.
“A girl who loses her lace,” prophesized Mary, “is surely headed for disgrace!”
“I fear for once you may actually be right,” muttered Lizzy, hopelessly watching as the smiling officers examined Lydia’s wanton appearance – nearly-exposed breasts and soaked petticoats clinging to her thighs.
“And - to make things worse - the lovely cowl you crocheted for her is totally wet and ruined!” added Jane, seeing the cowl floating in the pond.
“Not a problem,” answered Lizzy, taking comfort in small blessings. “It’s Superwash Merino!”
