MDL is a striped, garter stitch shawl worked in three colors: Medium, Dark, and Light. While it does require picking up stitches, MDL does not require short rows, intarsia, or grafting. A coloring page is included with the pattern.

The Brew City Yarns colorways used in the sample are from their House Sorting Kits collection. You can take a peak at the sample in person at Yarn It and Haberdashery in Columbus, Ohio. Act fast and you may be able to snag one the last Brew City Yarns kits! The staff at Yarn It are also happy to help you craft your own unique color combination.

I drafted the original version of this pattern during a sick day Harry Potter film marathon with my older son. When we decided to call it a day, I had to come up with a file name that would keep my pattern notes from being lost in the sea of “Blank” documents on my phone. “Three Color Garter Stripe Shawl,” would apply to so many of my designs I knew I had to tie the file name to this specific shawl. I went with MDL, for my favorite actor in the series, Matthew David Lewis, knowing I would think of him, sigh, and remember working on it while watching Harry Potter. When the time came to give this pattern a proper name I thought, “this is a totally valid name for a shawl that uses Medium, Dark, and Light yarn. You are exactly this nerdy.”
