The Mawata Lilies Shawlette is an original pattern designed for use with unspun mawata (silk hankies).

The downloadable PDF includes color photos, lace edging pattern in both words and charted form, and extensive step-by-step instructions for working with mawata.

Please note that the 250-yard estimate is very approximate. Mawata is measured by weight; how many yards you get depends on how thin the silk is pulled. For the shawl shown in the pattern, less than 1 oz. was enough for a small shawl, shoulderette or fichu.

The lace edge is adapted from an authentic Victorian lace pattern found in “Madam Worth-Kensington’s New Manual of Fancy Work,” published in 1886. Alternatives are given for working a different edge if you are concerned about yardage.
