Madder Cuffs and Cowl
I wanted a pattern where the background color would form a pattern in its centre. The star pattern I chose does just that. For the in-fill between the stars I decided to use a design somewhat similar to the Crow’s Feet from Fair Isle. To finish the design I needed a small pattern before and after the star. Wanting something simple I decided on a very small pattern with two rows of single colors on each side. Then there was only the ribbing to plan. For that I thought a rolled edge would be perfect.
I planned on a single layer to the cowl just the same as the cuffs, but then I thought a double layer for the cowl would show the small pattern and the rolled edge to better effect. That means a provisional cast on and grafting was needed for the cowl – sorry. I did change the star for the inside layer to the dots of the small pattern to make the knitting easier, which also makes the cowl reversible – two designs in one.
Madder was one of the most used dyes in Fair Isle designs in the past and was used in two of the colours in this design.
