Lilac flowers usually have four petals. When I was a kid we were searching for a flower that had more petals — for Luck Lilac. If you found one, you could make a wish.

“There will occasionally appear a tiny Lilac flower, usually a white Lilac, with five divisions of the petal instead of four — this is a Luck Lilac.” http://books.google.hu/books?id=2rNyZkeEDwMC&pg=PA150...
Alice Morse Earle. Old Time Gardens, 1901, republished in 2005

I was knitting the shawl while a bush of lilac just outside of my window burst in bloom. Amazingly, the deep purple of the flowers faded to lilac as they matured, so the shades of the flowers matched the two colors of the shawl.

The shawl is available in four sizes. The shape is achieved with smartly added increases therefore the shawl is crescent shaped even before blocking. Knitting starts at the neck with just a few stitches. Stockinette body is enhanced with garter ridge lines and will show off the best qualities of any yarn. The pattern of slipped stitches enhances the transition of colors between the body and the edge.

For information about sizes, measurements and yarn requirements please check the second page of the pattern located among the photos on the left.

Luck Lilac is the sixth pattern from the Inner Gardens e-book.
