A triangular shawl with wide crescent border, worked top-down from a small cast-on.

The pattern, as written, is geared to creating a shawl from one skein of standard lace-weight yarn (750-800m/820-875m) If you wish to use a different gauge of yarn, however, do go ahead! Whilst it is difficult to estimate the yarn requirement for substitutes - much depends on the particular yarn and your choice of needle-size - in very rough terms, to work the full pattern you may need something like 650-725m/710-795yds of cobweb yarn; or 850-900m/930-985yds of heavy laceweight; or potentially 1000-1100m/1100-1200yds of fingering yarn. The fingering-weight shawl would be enormous!

That said, the design is readily adaptable to different amounts of yarn, as the various lace sections may be lengthened or shortened as you choose. The more yarn you have, the greater your flexibility. Conversely, the suggested minimum yarn requirement for a balanced abridgement ranges from about 500m/550yds of cobweb-weight to 700m/765m of fingering, although you could probably get away with less if you omitted the final edging charts.

• The gold-to-purple gradient sample used approx. 97g = 775m/850yds of lace-weight yarn. It was worked on 3mm, 3.25mm and 3.5mm needles (US sizes 2-1/2, 3 and 4) with reference tension/gauge, on the 3.25mm (size 3) needles, of 22 sts x 30 rows per 10 cm square of stocking-stitch/stockinette, when firmly blocked as for lace.

• The golden-brown sample was worked with additional repeats of laces, to lengthen sections, and used just under 62g = 740m/810yds of heavy cobweb-weight yarn.

• The green-to-lavender gradient sample shows an abbreviated shawl (one lace section shortened), using approx. 95g = 575m/630yds heavy lace-weight yarn.

Please note that the pattern is given as charts only, with little written explanation. It should present no difficulties to knitters with experience of working lace and the ability to read their stitches, but is not really suitable for beginners.
