Lone Rock Hat
This pattern released as a paid subscriber reward on my substack, Notes From the Studio.
Using a chart from The Swedish Mitten Book, from Tofta, this easy 6-stitch repeat makes a cheerful little accent on a functional beanie.
Long enough to slouch a bit, and festooned with a knitted ball, this hat will bring the whimsy to all your outdoor winter activities.

YARN
Brown Sheep Nature Spun Worsted; 100% wool. 245
yards/100 grams.
• Main Color (MC): Scarlet: 1 ball
• Contrast Color (CC): Snow: needs only a small amount of this yarn. About 15 grams /40 yards.
NEEDLES
• US 5, for ribbing and for knitted ball
• US 7, for solid part of crown
• US 8, for stranded work
Or sizes needed to obtain gauge.
I used double points (dpns), because I prefer those to short circulars. You can easily work the ribbing and the stranded sections on 16” circulars, but you will need to use dpns, magic loop, or some other method to handle the shaping to the top of the hat and to
make the knitted ball.
NOTIONS & SUPPLIES
• Stitch markers
• Tapestry or darning needle
• Something to stuff the ball. I used some inexpensive acrylic yarn I had in my stash and wound a ball approx 1.5” diameter. You can use
polyfill stuffing or get a styrofoam ball from a craft store.
GAUGE
(After blocking, when hat is relaxed.)
Solid color stockinette: 20 sts and 30 rnds = 4”/10 cm on middle size needles
Stranded section: 20 sts and 23 rnds = - 4”/10 cm on largest needles.
