Close to the Brandywine River, the Shire is home to the Hobbits. Mortal creatures small in stature, with curly hair, pointed ears, and large hairy feet, generations of Hobbits are nestled into the hillsides in their Hobbit holes. Lovers of good food, drink, and pipe weed, they are a peaceful farming society mostly left untouched by the evils of Mordor. Generally shy and preferring to live quiet, predictable lives, they refer to people living outside the Shire as “outsiders” and have a love/hate relationship with Gandalf after Bilbo and Frodo develop a sense of adventure because of him. Courageous, brave, and steadfast of heart, these small, unsuspecting creatures are essential in saving Middle-Earth.

This adorable pocket Hobbit is inspired by Bilbo Baggins of Bag End! Worked in the round in one piece, the body of this adorable fellow is knit from the neck down to the hairy feet with cleverly placed short rows and filled with craft stuffing. Moss stitch is worked intarsia-style to form his curls, with facial expressions embroidered on post-knitting. Clothing items are each knit separately and full of the little quirks which define an amiable Hobbit—breeches with a buttoned flap, a dashing waistcoat, and an overcoat to keep him warm in his Hobbit hole. Make an additional set of clothes in different colors or switch up the hair color—make him your own!
