✨ The Story Behind Your Next Knit

Grab your favorite mug and settle in, because the Lattice and Latte Shawl is the perfect project to get lost in. It’s a love letter to texture and color, inspired by those cozy, quiet mornings with a good cup of coffee. I designed this long rectangular wrap to take you on an enjoyable journey, knitting flat through alternating sections of delicate (but easy!) lace and bold mosaic colorwork. It’s the kind of project that keeps your hands and your mind happily engaged, without being stressful.

This shawl starts and ends with a nice garter stitch border, and the long sides get a polished finish with an applied garter edge. You’ll use one main color and three mini skeins of Latta by Queen City Yarns, dancing between a classic lace pattern and a stunning mosaic motif. It’s truly a fun way to combine two techniques into a single, beautiful piece of wearable art. If you’re an intermediate knitter looking to stretch your skills, play with color, and create something unique that feels like a big hug, you’ve found your next adventure.

🧶 Quick Highlights:

  • Difficulty: Intermediate (perfect for exploring new techniques!).
  • Techniques: Mosaic colorwork (slipped stitches), eyelets, basic increases/decreases, knit, purl.
  • Construction: Worked flat, with the garter stitch edges applied to the long sides after you’re done with the main body.
  • Special Features: Mosaic colorwork combined with simple lace (it’s a fun way to combine those two techniques!). The pattern includes both written instructions and charts.
  • Yarn Weight: Sport weight.

📐 Approximate Measurements:

  • Length: 62” (155 cm)
  • Depth: 15” (38 cm)
  • Note: If you don’t feel like making a swatch (I get it!) - I recommend casting on the shawl, and working Lace Section 1 - then place on waste yarn and wet block. After it dries, measure gauge and make sure it’s close. (The shawl does require nearly all of the yarn in each skein, so a deviation from gauge may impact yarn requirements.)

📏 Gauge:

  • 23 sts / 28 rows = 4” / 10 cm in in Lace Motif using US 6 (4.0 mm) needles after blocking.
  • Exact gauge is not critical. However, deviation from the gauge will affect the size of the shawl and yarn requirements. Swatch it up!

🧶 Suggested Yarn:

  • Main Color: Two 100 g skeins of Latta by Queen City Yarn in Colorway Magnolia; 100% Non-Superwash Merino/Rambouillet; 312 yds/ 285 m per 100 g skein; Sport Weight (CYC #2)

    • OR Approximately 600 yds / 550 m of a similar sport weight yarn
  • Contrast Colors (CC1/CC2/CC3): Three mini skeins of Latta by Queen City Yarn; 100% Non-Superwash Merino/Rambouillet; 78 yds/ 71 m per 25 g mini skein; Sport Weight (CYC #2) in the following colors:

    • CC1: Agate
    • CC2: Spinel
    • CC3: Beryl
    • OR Approximately 70 yds/64 m each of three different contrasting sport weight yarns. This is a perfect project for scraps or mini skeins! Choose solid or mostly solid colored yarn that has good stitch definition and select colors that have enough contrast from the main color to allow the colorwork to stand out.

🥢 Needles:

  • US 6 (4.0 mm),circular needles at least 24” / 60 cm long (long straight needles can also be used since this is a narrow project worked flat), or size to obtain gauge.

  • Usually when working mosaic colorwork, I suggest going up a needle size, but for this shawl the gauge stays fairly consistent throughout. If you find your gauge changes between the lace sections and the mosaic/lace sections - go up one needle size for the mosaic/lace sections

✂️ Notions:

  • Tapestry needle (for weaving in those beautiful ends!)
  • Stitch markers (5, to keep you on track!)
  • Waste yarn if blocking as suggested in the gauge section
