Lacustrine Cowl
Lacustrine Cowl is the Easy-Intermediate design in a collection of three related patterns: Crochet to the Color Playbook.
This 11-page booklet introduces a way to add controlled randomness to crochet stitch patterns. Juggle stitch and color variables to bring out asymmetrical, edgy looks in classic crochet stitches.
It has one-of-a-kind outcomes--more like games than patterns. Each crocheter will apply the game rules different ways. It’s a kind of freeform crochet that I love to use with richly hand painted yarns.
I’ve developed Levels I, II, and III of this method over the years and teach a class on it at yran shops and at the national CGOA conference. This booklet is Level I.

Lacustrine Cowl is Easy-Intermediate because it uses offset rows.
Bare Bones Scarf is ranked Intermediate because it starts in one corner and finishes at the opposite corner, on the bias.
Tea Lights, with a few seed beads sprinkled in, is Easy-level and based on the practice swatch. All three scarf designs are self-edging and reversible. (Even the beads are equally visible on both sides.)
This pattern set presumes that you already know how to crochet these basic stitches: chain, single crochet {UK: double crochet}, and double crochet {UK: treble crochet}. A familiarity with filet crochet is helpful.
You’ll have the opportunity to learn these skills:
-How to evaluate different kinds of variegated yarns and create new effects with them.
-How to “crochet to the color” in traditional filet rows for a fresh randomized effect.
-How to prevent a gap after the first double crochet of each row (single crochet method).
-How to do the foundation double crochet, and start and end rows with increases or decreases.
