Kombu Moebius Cowl & Hood
An easy-to-memorize knit-purl pattern and worsted-weight yarn make this unisex Moebius a surprisingly quick knit. The pattern includes both charted and written-out instructions for both a cowl and a hood, each in three sizes: toddler, child, and adult. NOTE: Although the Pattern Notes on page 2 state that the Chart is on page 4 of the pdf, the Chart is actually on page 5. Thank you to lmarklein for catching that typo.
This project is suitable for adventurous beginners, and includes a photo tutorial for grafting in pattern. Wear the hood as shown, or fold back the 3x3 ribbed cuff for a sportier look.
Yarn Requirements
COWL
- Toddler: 85 yards
- Child: 95 yards
- Adult: 100 yards
HOOD
- Toddler: 150 yards
- Child: 225 yards
- Adult: 340 yards
Super-soft, machine-washable organic cotton is perfect for layering year-round, and Moebius knitting is ideal for that long circular needle or interchangeable cable you already own for magic-looping (or a great excuse to buy a new one)!
This design is named “Kombu” -- the Japanese word for kelp -- because the stitch pattern it uses was adapted from the “Seaweed” pattern in Barbara G. Walker’s A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns. The first syllable is pronounced “comb” like a hair comb.
Note: The child size is the most versatile. It was loose (but still wearable) on my 2.5 year old niece, and a little snug (but still wearable) on me (a petite adult).
