One skein will get you far, and stretchy yarns are a bit better for a pattern like this - the Stylecroft that I used isn’t actually ideal, but any chunky yarn will do. Alternately, you could knit two DK yarns together for a similar (and speckled) effect. Decorate with beads and buttons for a fancy effect.

To play with size, instead of stitching the ends together, sew a piece of elastic between them for added stretch.
