The Spencer, adapted for women’s wear from a gentleman’s riding jacket, debuted around 1800. Seemingly overnight, the close-fitting, waistlength, narrow-sleeved little jacket became a Regency fashion staple for women’s outdoor wear. This lacy version combines the appealing proportions of a short length with a deep U-neckline for a graceful frame. The chevron lace pattern reveals colors from the layer underneath to create a soft watercolor effect. Pair it with a couple of layers of colored camisoles peeking out above and below, and accessorize with your favorite style of necklace: bold, delicate, or eclectic.
