Isernia is a long crescent-shaped shawl. It is a beautiful and indulgent piece, yet endlessly wearable, worked all in garter stitch at a fairly loose gauge. The resulting fabric is squishy and soft, and the shawl looks great thrown around the shoulders, but its length means it can also be wrapped multiple times around the neck for a gorgeous cushy scarf!

Isernia is an ancient Roman town in Central/Southern Italy. The beautiful purple recalled the Romans (for whom purple was reserved for royalty), and its combination with the stunning tonal, stony grey reflects the stone buildings and regality of the Romans.

The shawl is an asymmetric, crescent-shaped shawl which uses short row shaping, slipped stitches and colour striping.

5 mm / US size 8 circular needle (minimum 100 cm/ 40” long)

YARN
Fingering weight yarn (includes a 10% buffer):
Colour A (purple): 395 m / 430 yards
Colour B (grey): 395 m / 430 yards

Yarn used for the sample:
Spinnwebstube (www.spinnwebstube.ch) Sockenwolle Twister (75% extra fine wool / 25% silk, 420 m / 460 yards per 100 g) in colourways U157 (Colour A) and 908 (Colour B)

The yarn used has a 25% silk content which adds to the drape of the shawl, but other fingering weight wool yarns would work well too. The design is conceived for a variegated yarn paired with a semi-solid or tonal partner. In this way the slipped stitch motifs are seen best, rather than using two variegated colours.

GAUGE
16 sts and 32 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches in garter stitch after wet blocking
