How I Roll is the evolution of my Rose City Rollers pattern. It takes all of my favorite sock techniques and rolls them up into one pattern. This is a mix-and-match pattern that will allow you to customize your sock to your personal preference in both style and knitting method.
Some of the options in this pattern are:

  • top-down construction
  • toe-up construction
  • 3 different heel flap styles for each construction method
  • 3 different toe styles for each construction method
  • German short row heel
  • simple texture pattern that goes great with colorful and variegated yarns
  • detailed explanation of my color blending technique, including tips for picking colors

One of the questions I get asked most often is how I blend the colors in my socks. This pattern will give you the basic guidelines to my color blending technique and you can apply them to the sock pattern using as many (or as few) colors as you choose. Keep in mind that when I blend colors in socks, I usually do the whole cuff in the first color, and most the toe in the last color, between those two there aren’t large sections of any one colorway, which is why I call it color blending as opposed to a color blocked pattern that has just a few transition rows between colorways

Sample socks are knit with yarn from Olann.ie, Kindred Red, Republic of Wool, and Hedgehog Fibres.

Materials
• One 100g skein of fingering weight yarn (for vanilla or textured sock), or 4-7 colors of fingering weight yarn, equaling approximately 50-100g, depending on size and desired length
• Size US 1 (2.25mm) needles, or size needed to obtain gauge (choose between a set of 5 DPNs, a 32”-40” circular needle for magic loop, two circular needles, or an 8”-9” circular needle depending on desired method)
• Stitch markers, I recommend using different color markers for each specific purpose
• Measuring tape or sock ruler
• Tapestry needle
