About the pattern

Use this Tunisian crochet houndstooth pattern to make elegant mittens with a perfect fit due to the thumb gusset construction.

To make the pattern stand out, pick two colors of yarn with strong contrast and use a smaller hook than usual.

All of these considerations are discussed in the video tutorial in which I show you how to make the stitches and where and how to switch the yarn colors.

Skill level

Beginner in Tunisian crochet. You use one color at a time, with two very basic Tunisian crochet stitches, the Tunisian simple stitch and the Tunisian purl stitch.

Measurements

See the attached table in the pattern photos. The table provides approximate sizes for the length of the mitten.
Circumference between 15-28 cm or 6-11”.
Length between 16-21.5 cm or 6.25-8.5”. Length adjustable.
Thumb circumference between 6-8.5 cm or 2.3-3.3”.

Materials

Use a springy or elastic yarn with high twist, such as a high twist merino yarn, as this property of the yarn will make the mittens slightly elastic and more comfortable to put on and wear.

  • Yarn: DK weight or size 3, with 200-250 meters per 100 grams, in 2 colors; approximate usage per size: 40, 46 (50, 56) 60, 66 g per pair or 100, 110 (120, 140) 150, 160 meters (half for each color);

  • Hooks: 5.5 mm Tunisian crochet or straight hook; 3.5 mm regular crochet hook.

  • Tapestry needle, scissors.

  • Optional: 2 stitch markers for the thumb, 1 m elastic thread for the cuff.
