“I made this jacket using Highland wool to demonstrate that Latvian designs may be knitted at larger gauges and still be very attractive (and warm). It also shows how important gauge is. The model Highland Jacket has a 44 inch circumference, but has 19 stitches less than the model of What a Difference a Gauge Makes which has a circumference of 28 inches. Both What a Difference a Gauge Makes and this jacket use large square motifs from A. Ventaskrasts’ books that are repeated on the front and back for the circumference. Size variations are made by change of gauge, not stitch numbers.

“The model was made with a set-in sleeve, but the chart allows for an optional drop shoulder. After the body was knitted, a facing and hem were added of Shetland jumper weight yarn to give less bulk. If you use a finer yarn for your jacket, you may wish to knit the facing and hem concurrent with the jacket as in The Star and Morocco, pages 114 and 90.”
