Herringbone HDC Fingerless Mitts
YARN
DK #3 yarn of choice, 1 skein (a wool or wool blend is recommended for warmth)
Sample is made with “Purple People Eater” DK weight yarn from With Love From JLB; 246 yd/225 m; 3.5 oz/100 g; 100% superwash merino.
(About 48 g is needed for one pair of the XS/S size; 62 g for M/L size; and 76 g for XL/XXL.)
HOOK & OTHER MATERIALS
4.5mm (US Size G/7) crochet hook
Stitch Markers
Yarn needle
GAUGE
In Hhdc, 17 sts and 14 rows = approx. 4”
Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain gauge.
To adjust the width of your gauge swatch just go up or down a hook size (.5 mm). You can try two hooks sizes (1.0 mm) if you’re way off. This can affect your height measurement too and may be enough to get your gauge right. So make sure to remeasure the height before proceeding.
To adjust only the height of your gauge swatch you’ll need to think a bit about the “golden loop”. Briefly, the size of the first loop you pull up through the next stitch is the key. If your gauge swatch has too few rows, you need to pull that loop higher before completing your stitch. If your gauge is too tall, you need to pull that loop tighter before completing your stitch.
SIZES/FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
The XS/S and M/L widths should fit most adult hands due to the lovely amount of stretch in this design. The M/L fits both me and my husband, even though we have very different hand widths. The XS/S also fits me and my adult son, although since his fingers are longer I would adjust the starting chain to cover more of his fingers.
Length is adjustable by adding or subtracting starting chain number and then adjusting the appropriate cuff and/or palm/finger section counts.
Width is adjustable by adding or subtracting rows before and/or after the thumb section.
XS/S (M/L, XL/XXL) = Approximately 6.5 (7, 7.5) inches long total, this includes about 2.5 inches of stretchy cuff at the wrist, and 4 (4.5, 5) inches to cover hand and part of fingers up to about the first knuckle. About 6 (7, 8) inches across, fits 5-7 (7-9, 9-11) inch circumference/width.
Herringbone Half Double Crochet Hhdc
I prefer to work the WS Hhdc rows from the back of the fabric by inserting hook from back to front and wrapping the yo’s the opposite way. My pattern includes a link to my video tutorial for this.
Most tutorials for Hhdc work the WS rows exactly the same as the RS rows, which will make a nice mitt too, the texture will just be different than my sample.
The yellow pair shown has one mitt made with “regular” Hhdc, shown on the right side of the photo here, and one “My Way”, shown on the left side of this photo.
