Hearts and flowers mitts
This pattern covers the basic fingerless glove shape and then a couple of possible fair isle inspired patterns to decorate them.
I have adapted these from a variety of sources including Alice Starmore’s Fair Isle books and other traditional patterns, but the overall design and look was devised to deal with the fact that I couldn’t find what I wanted.
For both I used Rowan cashcotton (now discontinued) for the main colour, but any 4 ply will work just as well. I used just under one 50g (197yd) skein of main colour per pair.
The pink contrast colour is jamieson’s 4 ply and the orange is Rowan Glace 5 ply (sportsweight). I used just 10g of the contrast colour for each pair. I like the way the sportsweight stands out very slightly and doesn’t affect the shape too much.
The pink/beige mitts were the first ones made and were designed to accompany a Selbu Modern hat, which you can see in the photo.
The mitts can also be made with k1p1 or k2p2 ribbing. Both are shown here.
Charts are shown for the 2 patterns.
