Meet Hearthside Cardigan

Hearthside Cardigan is all about plush texture, scrappy color, and the kind of comfort that feels like home. Imagine curling up with your comfort show wrapped in a squishy brioche hug, with enough structure from the thoughtful shoulder and neckline shaping so you can throw it on for coffee runs too.

Worked in basic two color brioche with two strands of fingering weight yarn held together for both Foreground (FG) and Background (BG) colors, the marled effect comes from changing one strand at a time so colors blend and flow softly. Speckles and small leftovers shine here, creating gentle shifts and layered depth.

A deep marled garter hem and cuffs anchor the design, and the oversized garter shawl collar brings just the right amount of structure. We also include a video guide to help you choose and blend colors for smooth transitions and your own custom palette.

This is a cardigan you will want to live in.

Why You Will Love It

  • Brioche squish with incredible depth and bounce
  • Soft marled color that shifts as you knit
  • Cozy shawl collar and relaxed silhouette
  • Clean shaping through shoulders and neckline for a great fit
  • Video guidance for choosing and blending colors
  • Perfect for stashbusting, for scrap lovers and speckle collectors

Construction Overview

Hearthside Cardigan is worked top down with seamless joins and gentle shaping.

  • Back shoulders worked first with short rows, then continued flat to the armhole
  • Front shoulders picked up from cast on edge for stability, shaped with short rows, then joined to back at underarm
  • Body worked flat in basic two color brioche, finished with a marled garter hem
  • Sleeves picked up and worked in the round in two color brioche, finished with marled garter cuffs, shaped for a tidy fit.
  • Wide marled garter shawl collar picked up and shaped with short rows at the end

Plush texture meets a tidy yet relaxed fit you will reach for nonstop.

Yarn

Fingering weight yarn, held double for both FG and BG
Four strands total

Changing one strand at a time creates soft marled transitions and layered color. Speckled yarns and small leftovers blend beautifully. Strong solids and highly variegated yarns create bolder striping, so we suggest leaning into speckles for the dreamiest effect.

Featured yarn: With Hue Loco’s Opalescent Set on Merino Sock, the shifts are soft and luminous, with speckles peeking through and tones melting gently into one another, perfect for Hearthside. Vickie ThePurledBird knit our stashy autumnal sample from Selena’s scrap bin, using the palette-planning tips from our included video tutorial. The result: a totally unique Hearthside, full of unexpected color combos and saturated hues. It’s proof that the best knits often come from the yarn you already have.
