World-cup Masters Champion Cyclist and Peloton Instructor Christine D’Ercole introduced me to the phrase, Hands on your back. It really didn’t take root as a personal statement until March of this past year, when during this insane pandemic, I unexpectedly lost my mother. While working through my grief and processing the layers of trauma that it brought up, I really clung to the thought of having the hands of the member’s of my community on my back. Whenever I just wanted to give up, or count myself out, I’d realize that I had strength that I didn’t know I possessed as I felt the encouragement and support of my community come behind me, without being asked, and just that simple gesture of placing a hands on someone’s back is what helped me to keep going.
Whatever you are going through today and whatever has been keeping you down, I hope this pattern reminds you of the strength you have within and of the support that you have from those in your community. May it be a tangible reminder of those hands on your back in the midst of the storm.
