Granny Lerwick Gloves
These traditional Fair Isle gloves are named in memory of my Granny who left within her knitting bag a pair of Fair Isle gloves which had been knit but not finished as ends need woven in and they need to be washed and blocked or as we say in Shetland, dressed. Granny was named Granny Lerwick by my sons to distinguish her from their other grandmothers and the name seemed fitting for these gloves.
Size
The pattern is versatile in that it can be made in different sizes as the Fair Isle pattern is a 12/stitch repeat and therefore the instructions include 60 and 72 stitch gloves suitable for small/medium hands and medium/large hands.
Gauge
32 sts and 32 rounds = 10cm/4inches on Fair Isle washed and blocked parts.
Materials needed
These were knit in 6 colours but this is optional and in 2 colours they look nice too.
In 6 colour version the main colour and contrast colour 1 used in background to Fair Isle section requires largest quantities. Two 25g balls of Spindrift/Shetland jumper weight/4ply for main colour. One 25g ball for CC1. All other colours require small amounts - listed in grams below -
3 (or your chosen number) of Double pointed 20cm long needles are recommended
Tapestry/wool needle
Bright waste yarn
Safety pins - 8 - optional
I have knit these gloves up several times in various colours. The charts show one coloured in colours my Granny’s gloves were knit in and another chart is in black and white. I have copied these and found the colours in local yarn shop in Lerwick - Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift range.
Pattern support
I include my email address for pattern support.
