Gent's Smoking Cap, with Velvet Top
This pattern involves a combination of crochet and sewing.
UK crochet terms are used throughout (UK dc = US tr).
The hat is made in four colors. It calls for five skeins of black, four skeins of maize, two of scarlet, and two of blue filoselle. Filoselle is a soft, shiny, six strand silk thread originally used for embroidery. Each modern skein of Pearsall’s filoselle has approximately 4m or 4 1/2 yards. The yardage of the original skeins is unknown.
No gauge, hook size, or any other information is given.
For a cap 22” in diameter use a gauge of 29sts per 4”/10cm.
For a cap 20” in diameter use a gauge of 32sts per 4”/10cm.
I estimate a size 8 perle thread and 1.75mm or 2mm hook may be suitable.
