The distinct diamond motif of garden lattices inspired this design. Similarly to how adding a lattice brings an elegant aesthetic to a garden or a yard, adding this pillow to an interior can spice it up with interwoven patterns. Garden Lattice Pillow makes a lovely modern piece that would fit in almost any room decor and combine beautifully with cushions in other patterns and shapes.

The front of the cushion cover is composed of traveling stitches and creates a cozy squishy fabric without the bulk introduced by the cables. Simple knits and purls, increases and decreases, and beautiful Japanese wrapped stitches unite in a deliciously textural knit. The back is worked in sleek stockinette.

Garden Lattice Pillow is knit seamlessly in the round. Instructions are both charted and written and include directions for an optional button flap.

Size

  • 15x15” / 38x38cm square to fit a 16x16” / 40x40cm cushion with 1” / 2.5cm of negative ease
  • Optional button flap 2” / 5cm deep

Yarn

  • 500yds / 457m of worsted weight yarn
  • Preferably solid or slightly tonal colorway
  • Sample cushion: Knit Picks Twill (100% superwash merino; 3.5oz / 100g, 149yds / 136m), 4 skeins, color: Bare / undyed

Needles and Gauge

  • US 8 / 5mm circular needles on a 24” / 60cm cable or the size needed to obtain gauge of:
  • 18 sts and 31 rows in 4” / 10cm in Stockinette Stitch, blocked
  • 25 sts and 31 rows in 4” / 10cm in Lattice Pattern, blocked
  • Note that difference in gauge will affect the required yardage and the finished size of the item

Construction

  • The cushion cover is worked seamlessly in the round.
  • The front of the cover is worked in the Lattice pattern, and the back is knit in plain stockinette.
  • An optional button flap can be worked flat over a half of stitches in 2x2 ribbing. A knitter can also use a zipper or stitch the cover up with a cushion inside if desired.
  • This project features Japanese wrapped stitches and traveling stitches - a combination of increases and decreases that has an appearance of cables.
