Construction notes: Françoise is a top-down cardigan with a tailored shoulder construction, deep V-neck, and split hem. The pattern includes two style options: a bold, colorful version worked in three contrasting shades using the intarsia technique, and a subtle Nordic version where a strand of silk mohair adds delicate sheen to the fabric. The back is worked first, with shoulder increases shaping the slope before continuing with armhole shaping. The fronts are then picked up and shaped individually, with mirrored neckline increases and matching armhole shaping. After joining all pieces at the underarm, the body is worked flat in one piece, optionally split at the hem for side slits. Ribbing and an invisible bind-off finish the edges, while a folded button band is added last by picking up stitches and knitting a double-layered trim along the fronts and neck.

Inspiration: This pattern is inspired by Françoise Hardy.
Françoise Hardy (1944–2024) was more than a singer and songwriter—she was a cultural icon of 1960s Paris, embodying quiet elegance, introspection, and effortless style. While others in her era thrived on flash and convention, Françoise stood apart. With her hushed voice and thoughtful lyrics, she became a voice of subtle rebellion. She wasn’t loud, but she was unafraid of being different. Where the world often celebrated glamour and noise, Françoise embodied quiet strength, simplicity, and individuality. She once said:
“I’m not very good at being conventional. I always liked to be a little bit different.”
Her spirit of subtle defiance guided the making of this cardigan.
Françoise showed that you don’t need to shout to stand apart—
you can be gentle, elegant, and still unmistakably yourself.
The Françoise Cardigan carries that same balance.
Its tailored shoulders and V-neck lend structure, while the choice between a calm Nordic version or a bold intarsia colorblock lets you decide how softly or strongly you want your difference to show. Even the hem—split or closed—gives room for small personal choices that shape the whole.
For me, this design is a quiet celebration of individuality.
It’s about embracing the details that make your cardigan yours,
whether that’s in color, shape, or the mood you carry into your stitches
