Galadriel gifts the remaining members of the Fellowship Lembas Bread, Elven fare made with a secret recipe and rarely consumed by anyone other than Elves. Said to sustain any creature for lengthy periods, this thin, triangle-shaped bread is wrapped in leaves and can stay fresh for months. It is what keeps Sam and Frodo alive as they continue their quest to Mordor. Evil creatures like Gollum will not consume it, even when starving. In The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Gollum creates mistrust between the two, framing Sam by sprinkling Lembas crumbs on him after they agreed to ration the remaining food. In doing so, he drives a wedge between the friends and leads Frodo to the giant spider Shelob, hoping to reclaim the Ring. This scene is pivotal, and the only time Frodo allows his faith in Sam to waver.

This beautiful scarf is inspired by the energy-giving cuisine. Grab your own Lembas Bread and get knitting! Worked back and forth in rows, this lace scarf mimics the patterning on the Elvish bread. Lace is worked only on the right-side rows, with all the wrong-side resting rows worked across in purl stitch. Garter borders and selvage stitches allow the scarf to lay flat. It’s easy to add additional length or make it shorter by adding or removing full repeats of the lace pattern.
