Not a sweater, not a poncho, Flying Diamonds is a cozy layering piece, inspired by a shiny and colorful graffiti on a wall near my house.
The graffiti has a detail that caught my attention: a diagonal gray stripe containing two white diamonds, similar to two eyes watching you from behind the wall.
I tried to replicate this detail with the striking Mosaic Stripe dividing the Front of the piece from the Left Sleeve.
The swoncho is worked flat from the top down with raglan shaping. It is not closed in the round because the mosaic stripe is worked in a second moment, to join the left shoulder/sleeve to the Front of the piece.
After the last increases for the neck, a mosaic stripe is worked in a diamond pattern resembling the one used later for the big diagonal stripe, but on a smaller scale.
The play of colors is repeated lower in the body, using simple garter ridges over the stockinette background and on all the borders of the piece.
When the piece is almost finished, the stitches for the sleeve opening are separated from the rest of the body, then the body is worked separately with short rows on the Back to obtain a rounded hem.
When the Body is finished, stitches are picked up from the selvedges on the front and the Diamond stripe that gives the name to this piece is worked using mosaic colorwork, attaching every row to the picked up stitches. Once the mosaic stripe is completed, the Body is finished with a garter border worked in the round.
Finally, the neck is finished with a garter border and the sleeves are worked to the same length as the Front of the piece and finished with the same garter border as the Body.
