Flower Buds Sweater
Construction
The sweater is knit mainly top-down with minimal seaming. Children sizes have 1 button at the back.
You start with the circular yoke knit flat sideways in garter stitch (using short-rows for shaping and creating the print) and then seamed together at center back.
You then pick up yoke edge stitches, add short-row shaping to raise the back for a better fit, separate for the body & sleeves, and knit them top-down in the round.
The body is knit straight and has minimal positive ease of 1-2 cm/ 0.5-1”. The sleeves have 2 shape options:
- Bishop (flared towards the bottom, then cinched at the cuff);
- Straight (slightly tapered). All edges are decorated with I-cord (applied or bind-off). You can also opt for 1 of the 1 color-blocking options (see schematics in the pattern photos):
- Option 1: body & yoke in MC, motifs in CC
- Option 2: yoke in MC, body and motifs in CC
Sizing (also see schematics in the pattern photos)
The pattern includes 13 sizes:
- 5 children sizes: 3-4 (5, 6-7, 8-9, 10-12) years (see corresponding chest & height below)
- 8 adult sizes XS-4XL, or 82-117cm/32-46” bust with 1-2 cm/0.5-1” positive ease
Yarn: (light-) fingering weight 400-500m/440-550yds per 100g/3.5oz woolen spun yarn in two colors - see the chart with yardage per size in the pattern photos
Needles:
- Main (for the body & sleeves): 3.5mm/US4 (or size to get gauge) circulars on a 60-80 cm/24-32” cable
- Garter (for the yoke): 3.25 mm/US 3 (or size to get gauge) circulars on a 60 cm/24” cable
- Edging (for the applied I-cord): 3mm/US 2.5 circulars on a 30 cm/12” cable, or DPN’s
Notions: crochet hook, 1 button (children only), stitch markers, row counter, tapestry needle, scissors.
Gauge (Measured per 10x10 cm/4x4” square after wet blocking)
- In GARTER STITCH - 22 stitches by 23 garter ridges (46 rows) - indicative needles 3.25 mm/US 3
- In STOCKINETTE - 24 stitches by 34 rows - indicative needles 3.5mm/US4
Techniques used
- Provisional cast-on (using crochet hook & scrap yarn)
- Working in garter flat, and in stockinette both flat (minimal purling) and in the round
- Reading charted instructions (optional)
- Increases: M1
- Decreases: k2tog, k3tog, ssk
- I-cord bind-off and applied I-cord
- Kitchener stitch
- Simple crochet (chain to create a button fastener - can replace with a different method)
- German short-rows
The print was partially inspired by lovely hats from Woollywormhead. If you would like to use up the scraps and make a matching hat - I highly recommend her Toph pattern & the whole Elementals hat collection.
