The Fiáin Hat Knitting Pattern

“Fiáin” means wild in Gaelic, and this little hat has definitely lived up to its name throughout my knitting journey.

Originally created back in 2013, the Fiáin Hat became a staple of the Lily Lake Knits brand—one of those cozy, comforting knits that travelled with me to markets, photo shoots, and many chilly Nova Scotia mornings. For years I sold the finished hat, and so many of you still have one tucked into your winter wardrobe.

I don’t sell them anymore, but I recently knit a few for a special order… and I forgot how fun they are to make. Super bulky yarn, super quick, and so satisfying. When I shared the photos, so many of you asked for the pattern—so here it is, just in time for Christmas.

This is the perfect last-minute, giftable project. It uses just one ball of Wool & The Gang Crazy Sexy Wool, and any super bulky yarn of your choice!

GAUGE:
8 sts x 13 rows = 4” in Stockinette Stitch

SUPPLIES:
US 15/10mm circular needles (16”) or double pointed needles. Use the Magic Loop Method if your circular needles are longer than 16”.
(Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.)
Tapestry Needle.
Measuring Tape.
1 Stitch Marker.
Pom Pom or Pom Pom Maker (Optional).

FIBER:
#6 Super Bulky / Super Bulky weight
Suggested Fiber: Wool & The Gang - Crazy Sexy Wool (100% Wool; 87yd 80m/7.1oz200g).
Yardage used for each size: 50 (58) yards.
Balls used for each size: 1 (1) balls.

SIZES:
Kids: 8”W x 7.5”L
Adult: 9”W x 8.5”L
