Februarius socks for the sock of the month pattern in the Dutch Sock knitting Group on Ravelry.
The challenge was to design something that was modular or in any case, different than a regular toe-up or cuff-down sock.

I spent months sketching ideas on my note block but not a single one really seemed to work. It wasn’t until Christmas, after knitting most of the Mitred Square Advent Scarf from Tricia in the Sock Madness group that I realized I could always start the sock with a mitred square as heel. And since time was flying, I decided to take the leap and design my first dk weight sock.

It’s a quick sock to knit, and lots of fun if you use a handful of different yarns. This pattern is perfect if you are new to mitred squares or sock knitting in general. I hope you’ll enjoy knitting these squishy warm socks!

Due to the fact the sock is modular, the heel flap is the first square to knit. After that a small band is knit for the upper edge, then it’s possible to knit the cuff or work further on the foot.
There’s lots of room to give these socks your own personal twist. And there’s info on how to mirror the squares too, although that does mean snipping the yarn possibly more often (if using just one colour throughout)

And one more plus to these socks - if the garter stitch/mitred squares section on the foot falls right, these socks will have that extra little bit of room for anyone with Hallux Vulgus. My teenager stole my second pair because she noticed they were the best socks she’s ever had with her extra wide feet!
