The Engelmann Oak cowl is named after my favorite hiking trail at Daley Ranch in Escondido, California. It is a big loop with one side providing a beautiful relaxing walk and the other side of the loop very strenous and rocky! This design is a big squishy lace cowl that is large enough to pull over your shoulders to wear as a capelet. In this design I thought it would be fun to experiment with gauge by changing needle sizes so the cowl design would be wider at the bottom and more narrow at the top for a better drape and fit around the neck.

Finished Measurements
Small: 15.5” (39.4 cm) high by 30.5” (77.5 cm) around top edge and 36” (91.4 cm) around bottom edge
Large: 17.5” (44.5 cm) high by 34” (86.4 cm) around top edge and 40.5” (102.9 cm) around bottom edge

Materials
Approx. 540 (700) yds/ 494 (640) meters of worsted weight yarn
I used Jill Draper Makes Stuff Hudson (4 oz/113 g, 240 yds/219 m, 100% superwash merino wool); 2 (3) skeins, color: Pale Blue Eyes
Note: I was able to knit the small size out of two skeins of Hudson but almost used all of both skeins. If you are worried about running short, please order an extra skein.
US size 8 (5.0 mm) 24” circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge
US size 7 (4.5 mm) 24” circular needle, or one size smaller than size needed to obtain gauge
US size 6 (4.0 mm) 24” circular needle, or two sizes smaller than size needed to obtain gauge
Tape measure or ruler
Tapestry needle
Stitch marker to denote the beginning of the round
Stitch markers in a different color to mark pattern repeats (optional)

Gauge
18 sts and 26 rows = 4” 10 cm in st st, blocked on largest needle size.
