Ellora of the Squirrel Folk
Ellora is an Indian Giant Squirrel, and spends her days scampering around near the caves that are her namesake. She busies herself carrying messages and scrolls of the utmost importance -- only the best are trusted to such a task! Indian/Malabar Giant Squirrels don’t usually have this bright of colouring (except in saturated photos), but Ellora has leaned into the hidden colours with beautiful dyes.
This 28 page crochet pattern in US terms is filled with colour photos (34), optional charts, and instructions to make sure your squirrel turns out just right. Also included in the download are two printer-friendly versions, one black and white, and the other black and white without photos. Instructions include a detailed colourwork squirrel, scroll, and scroll case. With a 2.75mm hook and DK weight yarn, she ends up roughly 21cm tall (depending on gauge) and is a perfect size for a desk companion or to fit in a child’s backpack (to join in all adventures!).
Key Details:
➔ Size: Approximately 21cm tall when made with DK yarn and a 2.75 mm hook.
➔ Yarn & Hook: Designed for DK weight yarn, but you can use another weight as long as it’s consistent. Gauge isn’t critical, but keep it tight. Example images use Classic 8PLY Wool, and Rustic Tweed 8ply from Bendigo Woollen Mills.
➔ Skill Level: Intermediate-Advanced. Small rounds, and plenty of colourwork! Everything is clearly labelled and photos are included to guide you through any complicated bits, but this pattern requires concentration and a fair bit of trusting the process. A video with instructions on how to change colours quickly and easily is also included with the pattern.

➔ Printer Friendly PDF Versions: B&W option, as well as B&W with no images
Materials:
➔ Yarn - The pattern is made for DK weight yarn, but being Amigurumi, gauge isn’t super important (as long as it’s tight), and you can easily switch it out for a different weight. Just make sure all the yarn used is the same weight and it should still work. I’ve used Classic & Rustic Tweed 8PLY Wool from Bendigo Woollen Mills for my squirrel, which has ended up as 21cm tall.
◆ Colour A: Tan for the head, body, tail, and limbs ( ~36m/40y )
◆ Colour B: Red for the head, body, tail, and limbs ( ~59m/65y )
◆ Colour C: Blue for the body and limbs ( ~27m/30y )
◆ Colour D: White for the scroll ( ~12m/13y )
◆ Colour E: Contrasting scroll colour (I’ve used dark grey) ( ~16m/17y )
◆ Colour F: Brown for the scroll case and strap ( ~45m/49y )
◆ A short piece of black yarn to use when embroidering the eyes and nose.
➔ 2.75mm crochet hook to keep the stitches nice and tight. Depending on your yarn you may need to go up or down sizes to match.
➔ Stuffing.
➔ Sewing pins to keep things in place as you stitch them together (not absolutely necessary, but can help keep things from sliding around).
➔ Stitch marker to keep track of rounds (I use an extra little piece of yarn).
➔ Yarn needle (or smaller if you prefer to attach pieces with thread).
➔ Scissors.
➔ Optional: Wire or pipe cleaner for the tail (only if the toy will not be for young children). My squirrel’s tail is 23cm long, but this could change depending on your yarn and gauge.
