This pattern was designed in mind that we all are different shapes and sizes and like to wear our items a certain way.
I clearly specify how I made mine which is the one pictured as well as the measurements I ended up with.

A Shall pin would work great instead of buttons.

I used 2 buttons in mine and secure them so that I can remove and place them wherever is most comfortable, also so I can remove them to clean my cowl as my buttons are special and I don’t want to risk ruining them in the wash.

Keeping in mind if you choose to use 2 buttons 1 of them i just place between my sts to secure it so you’ll want to choose the size button that does the same. The second you will chain a loop so it can be any size.

You can use other weights and other brands of yarn, I’ve added measurements and St counts you can follow to adjust it to fit your favorite yarn.
