Passing headlights sporadically illuminated shadows cast from the deepening dusk. Across the marsh a large group of starlings moved in unison across the treetops, undeterred by the occasional bat. Autumn asters hovered in profuse, low lying clouds along the hills that sloped gently down to the water. It had been an uneventful day and the light faded slowly, brushing her fingertips across the cattails as she turned in for the evening. Down at the roots, where the cattails met the brackish water, there might have been ducks. It was this small spot they chose to settle for a while- this small spot tucked away directly next to the road, with the tree perfect for sitting and the hill’s vantage point giving ample panorama for grazing deer. A snapped twig echoed loudly across the clearing, and he grabbed her hand and squeezed, frozen. With held breath, they waited, not daring to move. No deer appeared, but there was time. They settled in, there beside beaten ocean road, and the eddying waters, and waited for the deer to come.
