The Dunnottar Shawl is inspired by the spectacular architecture of Dunnottar castle in North East Scotland. The stitch pattern reflects the fascinating masonry patterns within the castle walls. Although now a ruin, the different sizes of granite stones and dividing blocks are clearly visible. Similar masonry patterns, known as Aberdeen Bond, can be seen throughout the Northeast of Scotland. This arrangement used alternate rows of large rectangular blocks and three vertically placed squared granite stones.

The shawl is knitted as a large triangle. Stitch patterns A and B reflect the bond arrangement with texture and eyelets in the first third of the shawl. Patterns C and D fragment the bonds in the following two-thirds of the shawl by gradually linking the eyelets across the rows.
