Dunnet Shawl
Dunnet Head is the most northerly point on mainland Britain and whose sheer cliffs fall 300ft into the Pentland Firth. On a clear day it offers fantastic views of the Scottish North coast and across the sea to the Orkney Islands.
Dunnet Shawl is a triangular top down shawl using three colourful 4ply or sock yarns and three different stitch pattern to great effect.
The pattern is the next design in my series of colourful textured shawls and aimed at knitters who love to experiment with colour combinations and like to try out new stitch patterns. It is a useful design for variegated sock yarns.
A simple textured knit and purl pattern is followed by a simple 3-colour slip stitch pattern where only one colour is worked in each row. Playful pleats for the edge finish the shawl.
Most 4ply, fingering and sock yarns are suitable as long as the yarn weights match. The yarn used here are:
- Fyberspates Scrumptious 4ply sport, 55% merino, 45% silk, 399 yds (365m) per 100g, col Flying saucer (green).
- Debbie Bliss Rialto 4ply, 100% merino, 198 yds (181m) per 50g, col purple.
- Malabrigo Sock Light Fingering, 100% merino, 440 yds (402m) per 100g, col. Indiecita (variegated).
Approx. yarn requirements for the 3 different colours are:
Colour A - main body: 400yds (365m)
Colour B - contrast colour: 150 yds (140m)
Colour C - pleats: 440 yds (400m)
The finished measurements are approx. 64” (165cm) wide and 27” (70cm) deep. These measurements vary according to yarn weights, needle size and degree of blocking.
The pattern is in form of charts and fully written instructions. It is suitable for advanced beginners. Skills necessary besides the basics are provisional cast on (for garter tab) and slip stitches.
I would like to say a big Thank you to my outstanding testers helin and eveguth and their great advice for improving the pattern.
