Dreaming of lilies is a stockinette brioche shawl, worked upwards from the tip in 2 colors. If you love brioche, you’ll be fascinated by stockinette brioche and will fall in love with it too!
Stockinette brioche is just as lovely as conventional brioche rib and just as straightforward to knit. The fabric is flatter and has more drape than brioche rib, but still has squish! While not reversible, the WS is attractive in its own way (see photo).
This pattern is a perfect introduction to the technique, and includes explanations with instructions for practice and gauge swatches.
Brioche knitters will find this a very relaxing knit: only basic increases and decreases are used, and there are no complicated cast-ons or bind-offs. Shaping and patterning occur only on main color (MC) right side (RS) rows, so there are lots of “resting” rows where you don’t need to look at the pattern!
Instructions are both written and charted. The pattern has been tech edited and tested.
Inspiration for this design came from the technique itself. While I was swatching, I was struck by the visual and textural properties of the fabric - to my eyes, it looked like intricate marble or silver inlay colorwork. To complement this quality, I designed a rather abstract stitch pattern which curves and converges and then straightens out again - reminding me of the stalks and buds of lilies. For visual continuity, I continued the pattern to the cast-off edge, choosing not to add a border.
Hope you love this design as much as I do!
