Dog Sledge Socks
This project was prompted by a reference in Edith (Jackie) Ronne’s autobiography about a pair of yellow socks she knitted in the Antarctic. Ronne does not describe the design of those socks, which have been lost to posterity, and I was thus free to create my own design, which I based on a model of a dog sledge (sturdy sled) made by Jackie’s husband Finn Ronne, now on display at the U.S. Navy Museum at the Washington Naval Yard in Washington, D.D. Finn, a strong believer in sledge dogs for polar exploration work, covered 3,600 miles (5,793.6 km) by ski and dog sledge in his lifetime, more than any other Antarctic explorer in history.
Finished sizes: 8 1/2 (9 1/2) inches; 21.6 (24.1) cm foot circumference; foot length is adjustable.
