When Liz from Kingdom Fleece and Fiber contacted me to do an advent collaboration using fiber – my first thoughts were “but I don’t spin.” But she was willing to spin up her lovely roving and provide me with a choice of colors that I decided would look just great in a simple brioche stitch. If this is your first time doing brioche, I think working with two colors makes brioche a bit easier. And I’ve got some very helpful hints to get you through.

Knit one for yourself and then knit one for a friend!

NOTE: Cowl can be knit using any number of small skeins – feel free to mix and match your stripes to suit your color preferences. Non-superwash wool or handspun is recommended to achieve the textured look of the brioche as pictured. The premise of this cowl is that you would knit one for yourself and then knit one for a friend. The cowl is reversible, and knitters may choose whichever side they prefer for the public side of the work. The cowl is folded back on itself, in half, to make a folded collar that wraps around the back of the neck before being fastened to the long edge and embellished with non-functional buttons.

PRINTING NOTE: This is a checklist pattern; it is not necessary to print the entire pattern if you prefer not to use the checkboxes for each section.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Length –35” X 10” / (71 x 25.5) cm; wet blocked and fully stretched
YARN: DK weight handspun, 6 colors of 50g/4 oz each 1 color of 100g/8 oz. Handspun yarns were HELD DOUBLE throughout.

NOTE: Aran weight or chunky yarn can be used as an appropriate substitute and for new brioche knitters, high contrast (color) yarns are recommended for ease in seeing the stitches. Yardage amounts varied greatly depending on what weight of yarn was used and whether or not yarn was held double to achieve gauge.

NOTIONS: stitch marker, tapestry needle, optional three 1” buttons.

SAMPLE: Sample was knit in Kingdom Fleece and Fiber handspun DK weight half skein Advent collection: six - 50-gram minis of CVM or polypay cross; MC- purple (64 g); CC1 – pink (23 g) CC2 – orange (23 g); CC3 blue/yellow (23 g); CC4 Teal w/sparkle (13 g); CC5 dusty blue (13 g) and CC6 – cream (28 g) and weighed 185 grams.

The yarn listed was spun by Liz of Kingdom Fleece and Fiber and does not represent the colorways included in the advent kit. Pictured in black and white.

Additional Samples - not in handspun:
Orange striped (3 color) sample was knit in Ella Rae Classic Superwash Chunky (100% plied wool; 121 yds / 111 m/ 100 g) in color #11 Golden Heather and Ella Rae Chunky Merino Superwash (100% wool; 136 yds /111 m /100 g) (held single) in colors #10 Brown and #27 Parakeet weighed 176 grams using 244 yards.

Brown striped (2-color) sample was knit in Suburban Stitcher Merino DK (100% merino wool; (250 yds / 229 m / 115 g) in the Playday colorway and Leading Men Fiber Arts Dramaturg (100% merino wool; 250 yds /229 m / 115 g) in the Tequila Sunrise colorway (held double) weighed 171 g and used 426 yds.

Two rows are counted as one row when measuring the gauge for Brioche Stitch.

The cowl is knit flat but requires a circular needle to accommodate sliding stitches from one end of the needle to the other to work 2 RS rows and then 2 WS rows throughout.
