Cromulent Shawl
CROMULENT SHAWL is an asymmetric triangular shawl with a bias knit body and a simple yet striking border. The border features horizontal and vertical stripes achieved using garter and brioche stockinette stitches.
The border is also a good opportunity to play with gradient yarns, mini-skeins or even use up some leftovers. Just make it your own.
If you have only ‘played with brioche’ and want to try a simple brioche project, this might be the one. For experienced brioche knitters, it will be a quick and mostly mindless knit, of course.
I designed this shawl as a go-to kind of accessory, i.e. something you reach for often, wear anywhere without much thinking, but still feel adequate. The word ‘cromulent’ originated as a joke in The Simpsons show. It means ‘acceptable’ or ‘fine’.
It is not quite an exaggeration to say that the world was a very different place when I started working on this pattern, last February. And I have been clutching at my knitting every now and then for hope and comfort during those times. I just hope that I am helping bring a little cheer to your day through my work.
Stay well, stay safe.
Finished measurements:
Length (along the longest edge) : 64” / 163 cm.
Depth : 18” / 46 cm.
Yarn requirements:
I have used a mix of slightly thick and thin handspun yarn samples in this pattern. I suggest using an equivalent worsted weight yarn.
420 yards / 384m of worsted weight yarn = 320 yards / 293m of MC, 100 yards / 92m of CC.
Needles used:
4mm/US 6 circular needles min 24”/60cm.
Gauge :
16 sts and 32 rows = 4” / 10cm in pattern st, blocked.
12 sts and 12 rows = 4” / 10 cm in two-color brioche stockinette, blocked.
Notions:
1 stitch marker, Tapestry Needle.
